Beloved by Toni Morrison

B

I began listening to this audiobook late in December and finished
January 22, listening most days for a short time while I walked. Toni
Morrison is both a beautiful writer and reader. I think I could happily
listen to her read the phone book. I keep hearing her say the name
Setha. The horrifying story of a group of enslaved people from a farm
called Sweet Home, beginning before the Civil War and then 20 years
later unfolds in an oblique way. She artfully unravels the mysteries of
the history of the characters. It is about memory, how it twists and
changes us, as Laura Symons said. Most become a real fully realized
person and and at the same time are part of the enumerating of the
inevitably unspeakable evils of slavery. It is a powerful story.
