The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski

T

Audiobook.  Mary Susan recommended this one and I downloaded it without reading about it in advance.  I’m not sure that had I known it was the story of Hamlet set on the upper midwestern farm of several generations of dog breeders and trainers, centered on a mute boy, I would have been very enthusiastic.  But she was right.

The precise and loving descriptions of the farm, the family, and the dogs is beautiful.  It is an enthralling book, because it has both the lyrical descriptions and a gripping story.  And the story felt natural, not facts forced into this old tale.

I was very sad when it was over.  Of course it doesn’t end happily, but I also suffered withdrawal from the daily dose of Wroblewski’s prose.
