The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

T

I loved Kostova’s second book The Swan Thieves so decided to pick this one up.  Sad to say, I don’t think it measures up.  It’s a long rambling book, making its way through Europe, especially Eastern Europe, with a little foray into an unnamed city in the U.S.  It wanders through time as well, from the present to the youth of the narrator’s father and reaching back briefly to medieval times.

After I began reading this tale with Dracula as one of the characters, I remembered reading some of Bram Stoker’s novel and abandoning it.  This book has that same feeling of ambling from one vaguely connected event to another.   The focus shifts often so that the book doesn’t feel tightly plotted.

And then I just can’t sustain an interest in the undead.
